MAS FEATURES Series: What Changed from Maximo 7.6 to MAS 9

Who this is for: Maximo administrators, developers, functional consultants, project managers, and business stakeholders navigating the upgrade from Maximo 7.6 to MAS 9 — and anyone who needs a clear, honest feature roadmap for what changed, what's new, and what broke.

Estimated read time: 6 minutes

Why This Series Exists

You've been told MAS 9 is "the next version of Maximo." That's like saying a Tesla is "the next version of a horse-drawn carriage." Technically related. Functionally? A different universe.

The upgrade from Maximo 7.6 to MAS 9 is not a version bump. It's a complete platform transformation that touches every layer of the system — from the application server to the UI framework, from the mobile platform to the reporting engine, from the integration approach to the licensing model.

"So it's basically Maximo with a new look, right?"

No. Absolutely not.

We wrote this series because every team we've worked with has the same reaction: they start the upgrade thinking it's a migration, and they finish it realizing it was a rebuild. The sooner your team understands the scope of what changed, the better your upgrade will go.

What This Series Covers

This is a 25-part feature roadmap organized in four sections — each post is a focused ~10 minute read so nothing gets lost:

Key Themes Across the Series

1. This Is NOT a Typical Upgrade

Every technical layer changed: deployment model, Java runtime, UI framework, navigation paradigm, mobile platform, integration approach, reporting engine, and licensing model. Your old muscle memory helps with business processes — but the mechanics are fundamentally different.

2. MAS 9 Is Not Just Manage

Organizations upgrading from 7.6 frequently treat it as a one-for-one replacement. It's not. MAS 9 is an entire Application Suite — Health, Predict, Monitor, Visual Inspection, AI Assist, Optimizer, and more. Your AppPoints license may already cover applications you've never explored.

3. Gaps Exist — And That's OK

Work Center replacements aren't 100% feature-complete. Purchasing RBAs don't exist yet. BIRT reports must be manually recreated in Cognos. Knowing the gaps upfront prevents mid-project surprises.

4. AI Is Now Native, Not Add-On

MAS 9.1 bakes AI directly into Manage — natural language queries, field value recommendations, similar record detection. The suite applications layer ML prediction, computer vision, and generative AI on top. This isn't a bolt-on; it's the platform's direction.

5. Data Quality Determines Everything

Every AI application downstream depends on the quality of your Manage data. If your install dates are 40% populated and your failure codes are inconsistent, Health scores won't make sense, Predict models won't train, and MRO Optimization won't optimize. Fix the data first.

Recommended Reading Paths

For the Executive Sponsor

  1. Start with Part 1 (skim the architecture, focus on "What Did NOT Change")
  2. Read Part 2 (understand what the AppPoints investment unlocks)
  3. Read Part 3 (licensing changes — what's free now, what still costs)
  4. Skip Part 4 unless supply chain is a priority

For the Technical Architect

  1. Part 1 in full (architecture, Java 17, integration, security)
  2. Part 2 for integration data flows between suite apps
  3. Part 3 for infrastructure requirements (GPUs, ArcGIS, etc.)
  4. Part 4 for REST API and mobile architecture details

For the Functional Consultant

  1. Part 1 (Work Centers→RBAs, Operational Dashboard, Scheduling)
  2. Part 2 (Health, Predict, AI Assist capabilities)
  3. Part 3 (HSE, Spatial, Industry Solutions relevant to your client)
  4. Part 4 if supply chain is in scope

For the Supply Chain Team

  1. Part 4 first and in full
  2. Part 1 for RBA and mobile context
  3. Part 2 for AI Assist, Parts Identifier, and Predict integration
